Pediatric Headache Clinic
What to Expect at Your Initial Evaluation
Helping a child manage headaches and their accompanying symptoms requires a comprehensive and compassionate approach to care. At Phoenix Children’s, we understand that not all headaches are the same. At the initial evaluation, you will meet with your specialist to discuss symptoms and concerns. We work closely with your child and family to find the right treatment approach to help reduce triggers, relieve symptoms and prevent recurring headaches.
Your child’s plan may include basic strategies such as rest, fluids, lifestyle modifications and over-the-counter medications. However, they may also require specialized care and services, such as those offered through our Complex Headache Clinic or a deeper understanding of how lifestyle management can aid in their recovery.

- Creating a comfortable environment for your child to rest during a headache
- Daily exercise

Complex Headache Clinic
Sometimes, headaches can be challenging to manage. When that happens, your child’s provider may recommend additional treatment approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback and relaxation techniques. These integrated, evidence-based therapies have been proven to be effective for children with migraines and chronic headaches and are often used with medication. It can also help children manage anxiety and depression, which frequently accompany headaches.
At the Complex Headache Clinic, your child will have the opportunity to meet with both a pediatric headache specialist and pediatric psychologist on the same day.
