Vascular tumors and vascular malformations are often treated very differently, so making the correct diagnosis is vital. Sometimes children with vascular anomalies also have overgrowth or undergrowth on certain parts of the body. They may have other health issues. Vascular lesions can be a big clue to help doctors diagnose an underlying genetic condition.

To make an appointment with the Vascular Anomalies Clinic, you will need a referral from your physician. Your child may need imaging or other tests prior to the appointment. If your child was seen outside of the Phoenix Children’s system, we’ll need the related medical records including digital copies of imaging tests and results.

We’ll review your child’s imaging, test results and medical records and then examine your child in person. We’ll discuss possible treatment options and answer any questions you may have. These visits can take anywhere from one to two hours. We are here for your family every step of the way to address any further concerns or questions about your child’s condition or treatment.

To diagnose your child’s vascular anomaly, our team will:

• Review your child’s medical history
• Review radiologic imaging studies and pathology
• Conduct a physical exam
• Conduct tests, such as biopsies, ultrasounds and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, to pinpoint the type of vascular anomaly

Once a vascular anomaly is diagnosed, we’ll work with your family to create a treatment or management plan. Your child’s plan may include:

• Medications
• Interventional radiology procedures
• Lasers
• Medications
• Surgery

Our team is made up of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses and medical staff from a variety of departments, each specially trained to diagnose and treat vascular anomalies in children, teens and adults. To ensure your child receives the right diagnosis and best treatment for their condition, your child’s team might include a:

• Dermatologist
• Ear, nose and throat surgeon (otolaryngologist)
• Hematologist/Oncologist
• Interventional radiologist
• Ophthalmology
• Orthopedics
• Pathologist
• Pediatric surgeon
• Plastics and reconstructive surgeon

As part of our commitment to improving quality of life for children with skin conditions, we partner with the American Academy of Dermatology for Camp Discovery. This summer program offers children living with skin conditions a one-of-a-kind experience — a week of fun-filled activities such as fishing, swimming, archery, horseback riding and more. Camp Discovery gives kids a chance to connect with other children living with similar skin conditions. Dates and locations can be found on the website each year.
