Thousands of young people in Phoenix experience homelessness, and many urgently need medical care. Without support, these children and youth face greater risks of illness, injury and depression, because of the hardships they face every day. Barriers like lack of health insurance, transportation, unsafe living conditions and no consistent access to healthcare make it even harder for them to get the help they need.
Driving Health and Delivering Hope
Since 2000, Phoenix Children’s has brought care directly to these vulnerable children and youth through the “Crews’n Healthmobile,” a 35-foot mobile medical unit (MMU). Originally launched in partnership with the Children’s Health Fund, the program has grown into a lifeline for at-risk children, teens and young adults.
Today, Phoenix Children’s fully leads the program and has expanded its reach from a single MMU operating four weekly clinics to a network of three MMUs and three fixed-site clinics. In 2015, the program was recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as being dedicated to delivering respectful, compassionate and holistic care that meets young people where they are – helping them heal, restore hope and build a healthier future.

En Route to Better Health
Our mobile clinics travel across the Phoenix Metropolitan area, serving infants, children and young adults up to the age of 24 who are unhoused or at risk of losing stable housing.
Each week, our teams provide preventive and behavioral health services along with chronic care management at more than 30 half-day clinics. Care is available through both our MMUs and fixed-site locations, making sure young people receive consistent support where it is most convenient for them and where they may already be receiving other vital resources such as housing or education.
The MMUs bring safe, accessible care directly to youth in the Phoenix metropolitan area. They travel to local shelters, residential and transitional living group homes, drop-in centers and schools that support at-risk children and teenagers in our community. We provide care to youth who are 0-24 years old and also support their families by providing them with helpful resources. Care is provided at no cost to the patient.
Each mobile medical unit is equipped with:
- Intake area – a welcoming space where each patient begins their visit
- Triage area – for health assessments
- Exam rooms – private spaces for medical care
- Pharmacy – to provide needed medications
- Laboratory – for onsite testing and lab tests that are sent out
Along with the mobile medical units, care is also available at our three fixed-site clinics. These clinics provide a safe and consistent place for children and youth in our community who don’t have stable housing or support. We welcome youth experiencing homelessness, survivors of human trafficking and those transitioning out of foster care who have nowhere else to turn.
