A hospitalization can happen at any time, often adding to existing family stressors. Social Work Services at Phoenix Children’s helps patients and families overcome life’s most difficult challenges and troubles of everyday living – inside and outside the hospital.

If you don’t know where to turn for support, start with your social worker. Whether it’s coping with your child’s medical condition or navigating resources, you’ll find us ready to assist whenever and wherever you need it. If we don’t know the answer to your question, we’ll find out who does.

Social Workers at the Hospital

At Phoenix Children’s, your social work team is highly trained and experienced. All our practicing social workers have a master’s degree and a minimum of two years of supervised field work. They’re also licensed in Arizona.

As a team, we work on nearly 10,000 cases each year. We take a systems approach to our psychosocial assessments of patients and families, which means we look at everything that influences mental health and well-being. Examples include family, school, the greater community and culture. This approach gives us a complete understanding of a person and their needs.

What Do Social Workers Do?

Social workers start by assessing the needs of a patient and their family. Then, we develop a complete treatment plan. Your social worker can help:

  • Answer questions, so you know your child is getting the quality medical attention they deserve
  • Find financial, community and other hospital resources (for example, lodging, meal assistance and Spiritual Care), so you can focus on your child
  • Identify coping skills and outlets for stress relief
  • Provide opportunities to process thoughts and feelings about a hospitalization or medical situation
  • Offer encouragement
  • Recognize strengths and barriers to successful coping
  • Simplify communication between families and the medical team
