Center for Perinatal and Infant Mental Health
Your doctor or your baby’s doctor may refer you for our services, or you can turn to us during pregnancy or any time after giving birth. We can even help if you’re planning to get pregnant and have a history of mental illness or are already on an antidepressant or other medication, so you have a plan in place when you become pregnant.
Therapy may involve counseling, support groups and finding family or social support. If needed, many medications and other treatments have been proven safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Many others are most likely safe, but do not have long-term data from years of clinical trials and observation.
But we know today, from decades of history, that your depression or other mental health issues can affect your baby. It can prevent proper bonding and affect your baby’s development. Our team can help you make educated decisions about the benefits of treating your mental health symptoms versus any possible risks.
In-Hospital Screening and Care for Mom and Baby
Having a baby who needs hospital care can be stressful even under the best of conditions. If your baby is being treated in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), our Cardiology unit or elsewhere at Phoenix Children’s Hospital - Thomas Campus, your child’s care team may ask us to talk to you. We can help with any overwhelming emotions you may be having and help you stay mentally stable and strong for yourself and your baby and family.
If your baby is in our care, and you need someone to talk to, let our baby’s care team know. We’ll make the arrangements to get you the resources and care you need.
Virtual Visits
If you need care and can’t leave your baby’s side, we can come to you either in person or through telemedicine. Our virtual visits via Zoom allow us to see you interact with your baby and other caregivers and talk to you about any concerns you may have. We’ll do everything we can to get you the care and support you need, keeping your and your baby’s safety and health our top priority.
