Our Emergency Department (ED) and American College of Surgeons-verified Pediatric Level I Trauma Center (the only one in the state) opened in September 2017. This amazing care facility is the only pediatric emergency service in a free-standing children’s hospital in Arizona. We provide care to 100,000 children annually from the Phoenix metroplex, rural Arizona and surrounding states, as well as travelers and immigrants from across the border.

Our ACGME-accredited Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship was established in 2004. We have 30+ board-certified PEM physicians in our faculty. Our fellows cover the Phoenix Children’s ED 24/7 with the exception of protected time during our weekly didactics. We currently have twelve fellows in our program and will offer four positions through the NRMP.

Program Description and Goals

The goal of the program is to train academic pediatric emergency physicians who will serve as leaders by providing expert pediatric emergency care, teaching of other emergency care providers, and by conducting research to improve the care of acutely ill and injured children. This process occurs over three years and increasing responsibility is provided as time passes. These goals and objectives are achieved primarily through direct patient care, supervision of resident and student care, and referring/consultant physician calls. Direct patient care experiences are supplemented with practical workshops and courses (PALS, ATLS, suture and splinting workshops) and conferences.

Our ACGME-accredited Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship was established in 2004. Our fellows are primarily based at Phoenix Children's, where they cover the ED 24/7 except for protected time during our weekly didactics. Outside rotations include adult emergency medicine at Valleywise Health Medical Center, trauma at St. Joseph's Hospital, toxicology at Banner University Medical Center, and EMS with the Phoenix Fire Department. The curriculum includes a full research year distributed evenly over the 3-year fellowship. Our weekly didactics delivers a curriculum that includes ED and subspecialty lectures, board review, radiology rounds, simulation, POCUS, literature review, and protected case review.

Minimum requirements to apply:

  • US citizenship, permanent resident, or J1 visa sponsored by ECFMG
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited pediatrics residency
