Phoenix Children's Hospital Medicine Fellowship program is the primary Pediatric Hospitalist Fellowship training program in Arizona at one of the biggest pediatric hospitals in the southwest, Phoenix Children's. Pediatric Hospital Medicine fellows will gain experience working on Pediatric Wards at Phoenix Children's Thomas Campus, East Valley Campus, and Arrowhead Campus locations. Additionally, fellows will spend time at a community hospital site, Valleywise Health Care Center.
Our program's first fellow started in July 2014, we gained initial ACGME accreditation in April 2020, and we currently accept three fellows per academic year. Our Fellowship program is designed to encompass all the ACGME curriculum requirements while also allowing ample individualized time to meet fellows' specific fellowship and career goals with choice of electives.
Phoenix Children's Hospital Medicine division is comprised of approximately 60+ hospitalists, including ten fellowship trained hospitalists. The team manages the majority of patients admitted to Phoenix Children's with a strong subspecialty co-management model creating a very diverse clinical experience for our fellows. Many of our hospitalists serve as leaders within our institution for patient safety, quality improvement and medical education providing many mentored opportunities for our fellows.
Program Description and Goals
The fellowship is designed to prepare fellows for a career in Pediatric Hospital Medicine. Fellows achieve the fellowship's goals and objectives through direct patient care, as well as participation in scholarly work, quality improvement initiatives, and medical education of residents and medical students on the WARDS team that fellows run with an attending. The comprehensive curriculum is aligned with Pediatric Hospital Medicine core competences and include a formalized Pediatric Hospital Medicine monthly conference series in partnership with the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson. These monthly one-hour sessions are hosted for hospitalists and fellows and is optional for the division to attend for credit. Additionally, the program organizes a quarterly three-hour Bootcamp series (four sessions per academic year), open to fellows and hospitalists specifically focusing on research, quality improvement and medical education.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Phoenix Children's Hospital Medicine Fellowship is to train fellows to become the future generation of pediatric hospitalists who will provide skilled clinical care to acutely ill and injured hospitalized children, enhance the performance of the hospital and health care system, generate new knowledge for the field through research and innovation, and develop skills to educate other physicians and health care providers. The program hopes to train physicians who will serve as future leaders in the field of Pediatric Hospital Medicine.
