Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics
Please take a moment to read our frequently asked questions. We’re always available to answer your questions and encourage you to contact our office if you have a question that is not answered below.
Understanding Pediatric Care
A pediatrician is a medical doctor who specializes in caring for children. Our pediatricians have advanced training in treating the health and illnesses of infants, children, teens and young adults.
Pediatricians offer preventive healthcare for children in good health. They also treat children with acute (sudden) or chronic (long-term) illnesses. Pediatricians give parents support and advice on issues like growth and development, safety and prevention, nutrition, and emotional wellness.
Immunizations are a safe and effective way to protect children from serious and potentially fatal childhood diseases. They are given at different ages to help build strong immunity and prevent illnesses that could otherwise be life-threatening. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, vaccines have reduced the number of infections from vaccine-preventable diseases by more than 90%.
If you have questions or concerns about vaccinations, our team is here to listen and provide guidance. Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics is pro-vaccine and supports the immunization schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
At Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics, we share your concern for your child’s health and safety. We carefully review vaccine research and follow trusted medical guidelines to recommend what’s best for your family. Vaccines play an important role in preventing serious illnesses. We encourage our patients to follow the recommended schedule from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
As part of our commitment to keeping all patients safe, we accept families who are willing to vaccinate according to this schedule. If you have questions or concerns, we’re here to listen and help you make informed decisions.

Prenatal Care
We encourage you to begin building a relationship with your pediatrician before your baby is born.
Please call one of our offices for more information or to make an appointment.
Phoenix Children’s partners with several hospitals throughout the Valley so that we can care for your newborn closer to where you live. Wherever you choose to deliver your baby, you and your baby will be seen by the pediatric hospitalists.
After your baby is born, we will see them in the clinic 2-3 days after discharge, depending on health concerns.
Well Visits and Preventive Care
Well-child visits aren’t just for when your child is sick. Regular exams are a key part of keeping them healthy as they grow. These checkups help your pediatrician track development, provide vaccines and build a relationship with your family. Routine visits also give you the opportunity to ask questions about your child’s health, behavior, nutrition, safety and well-being.
Visit our Wellness Exams page for the recommended well-visit schedule.
Well visits for children begin shortly after birth and continue through young adulthood. Our pediatricians recommend following the schedule established by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Visit our Wellness Exams page for more information.
Regardless of this schedule, we are happy to arrange for a well-child appointment any time a patient or parent requests a visit. Please be aware that some insurance policies do not cover all well visits. You may want to confirm coverage with your particular plan.
Availability is similar to a well-child appointment, though there is a very high demand at the end of the summer. We encourage you to schedule these appointments in the late spring or early summer to avoid the back-to-school rush.
Appointments and Scheduling
Appointments can be scheduled online or by calling our office during regular business hours.
The Patient Portal allows you to view your child’s health information, message your doctors, request appointments and more. You will be able to access your child’s portal once you have set up your account. Visit the Patient Portal page for a step-by-step guide to logging in to your account.
Yes, we always welcome new patients! Contact one of our offices for additional information or to schedule an appointment. Visit our New Patients page.
When you make your appointment in advance, you can typically see whichever physician you prefer. If you have a sick child who needs to be seen on short notice, we will try to accommodate your request as best we can. Our goal is to take care of sick children as quickly as possible.
To stay on schedule for all families, we may ask you to reschedule if you’re more than 15 minutes late for a well-child visit. For sick visits, we’ll do our best to fit you in, but you may need to wait until there’s an opening later in the day.
After-Hours and Emergencies
When our office is closed, calls are taken by our answering service. If you have a question that cannot wait until the office reopens, your call will be directed to our triage nurse. The triage nurse will either answer your questions or put you in contact with one of our physicians. This service is available after 5 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends.
Sometimes, it may be difficult to know whether your child’s medical condition requires care from a pediatrician or a visit to an urgent care center or emergency department. Our Emergency & Urgent Care page explains the differences and helps you select the best option for your child.
If your child is having a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 right away. For other urgent concerns, give our office a call. We’ll talk through what’s going on and help you figure out the best next steps for your child’s care.
Health Records and Medication Requests
To request your child’s medical records, contact our Medical Records office. If your child is currently a patient at Phoenix Children’s, you can access their medical records through the Patient Portal.
Your child’s immunization records may be available through your pediatrician’s office or the Arizona Department of Health Services immunization registry. If your child is currently a patient at Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics, you can request a copy of their immunization history through our Patient Portal or by contacting your clinic location directly.
When you need a refill for a medication, contact your pharmacy first. If the pharmacy is unable to refill the prescription, call our office. Please allow two business days for a refill request to be processed. If the request is for a prescription to be mailed, allow one week.
Phoenix Children’s also offers pharmacy services at our Retail Pharmacy located on the Thomas Campus. Our pharmacy gives you access to specialized pediatric prescription medications and exceptional pharmacists and technicians who have a vast knowledge of pediatric pharmaceutical care.
