Down Syndrome Clinic
Down syndrome most often occurs when a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21 (Trisomy 21). It’s estimated that 1 in every 691 babies in the U.S. is born with Down syndrome. In fact, 161 babies in Arizona are born with Down syndrome every year.
Children with Down syndrome have an increased risk for certain medical conditions, including congenital heart defects, respiratory problems, sleep related disorders, hearing problems, hematologic abnormalities and thyroid conditions. These children are also more likely to experience other developmental conditions, such as intellectual disability, global developmental delay, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorders, among others.
Our developmental pediatrician has extensive experience working with children who have Down syndrome and a dual diagnosis, such as autism spectrum disorder. Through collaboration with specialists across our hospital, we can connect your child with the care they need to manage other medical conditions.
