Objectives:

At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the roles that the stomach & kidney play in metabolic acid/base balance
  • Differentiate renal from extra-renal causes of metabolic alkalosis
  • Understand the role of salt resorption and acid excretion in the development of metabolic alkalosis
  • Address board-style acid-base questions quickly, easily, and correctly

About this presenter:

A practicing physician for more than 20 years, Dr. Perry also is an accomplished medical educator and researcher. Dr. Perry trained in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, followed by fellowships in Nephrology and Medical Education at UCLA where she stayed as faculty until 2022 before moving to join the division of Nephrology at Phoenix Children's Hospital. Dr. Perry has served as the principal investigator on numerous projects funded by the National Institutes of Health and other leading research organizations. Her research primarily focuses on the effects of uremia and small molecules on bone cell health and growth. She has had more than 70 peer-reviewed papers to her credit.

From the earliest days of her career, Dr. Perry has participated in professional societies to advance her expertise and continues active membership in organizations including the Society of Pediatric Research, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the American Society for Pediatric Nephrology. She also has a long record of service and leadership with the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Stars program and the National Kidney Foundation among other groups.
