Narasimhan Jagannathan, MD, MBA, is a pediatric anesthesiologist and is currently serving as division chief of Anesthesiology at Phoenix Children's. Before joining the team, Dr. Jagannathan served for 17 years as the division head for general pediatric anesthesia at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. He also served as a professor of Anesthesiology at Northwestern University in Chicago, and he looks forward to training the next generation of clinicians and leaders at Phoenix Children's and the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix.
As the division chief, Dr. Jagannathan is honored to lead Phoenix Children's nationally renowned anesthesiology group, which has created a legacy of excellence in caring for children. After earning his medical degree from Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in Madras, India, Dr. Jagannathan completed an anesthesiology residency at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. He then completed a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. In 2017, Dr. Jagannathan obtained a master of business administration from the Haslam College of Business, The University of Tennessee - Knoxville.
Dr. Jagannathan is board certified in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia and the International Anesthesia Research Society. He's currently the vice president of the Society for Airway Management (SAM) and serves on the board of directors for both SAM and the Society for Head and Neck Anesthesia.
Active in clinical research, Dr. Jagannathan has designed and conducted several randomized trials that focus on the pediatric airway. He has lectured and led workshops nationally and internationally on the topic of airway management in children, specifically the use of supraglottic airway devices and fiberoptic intubation in children -- both in the normal and challenged airway.
Dr. Jagannathan has presented at multiple international (more than 50 countries) and national conferences. A few of the national conferences include the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Annual Meeting, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA) Annual Meeting and the World Airway Management Meeting.
He has a vast list of publications that includes articles in highly respected medical journals as well as books and book chapters. He serves as a co-editor for the book entitled Management of the Difficult Pediatric Airway - a multidisciplinary reference guide covering critical techniques for the safe management of the challenging pediatric airway.
Dr. Jagannathan is also a senior editor for The American Board of Anesthesiologists' advanced written exam and a senior oral board examiner for The American Board of Anesthesiologists. In addition, he serves on the editorial boards and as an editor for scholarly publications such as Anesthesia & Analgesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, Journal of Clinical Anesthesia and the Journal of Anesthesia.
Dr. Jagannathan's professional interests include airway management, airway device design, pediatric patient safety, trainee education, clinical operations and anesthesia staffing/business models.
