Curricula & Schedules

Schedule:

During the first six months of training, the fellow will have 1 calendar month rotations with each faculty member allowing for exposure to preoperative planning, intraoperative care, and postoperative follow up for patients. This will involve clinic time, inpatient rounding, and surgical time. There is sufficient volume to meet minimum case requirements in the first six months of training. The second six months will be more directed by the fellow if they feel a stronger interest in any particular area. This will allow more focused training for the second half of the fellowship. Alternately, the rotation schedule can be repeated for the second six months.

• Jul 8-11: orientation
• Jul 11-31: cleft/CF/maxillofacial/general pediatric plastic surgery
• Aug: cleft/CF/maxillofacial/general pediatric plastic surgery
• Sept: cleft/CF/maxillofacial/general pediatric plastic surgery
• Oct: cleft/CF/maxillofacial/general pediatric plastic surgery 
• Nov: hand/micro/general pediatric plastic surgery 
• Dec: hand/micro/general pediatric plastic surgery 
• Jan: hand/micro/general pediatric plastic surgery 
• Feb: fellow directed
• Mar: fellow directed
• Apr: fellow directed
• May: fellow directed
• Jun: fellow directed
• Jul 7: fellow graduation

While there are no specific research blocks, the expectation is that research will be conducted continuously throughout the year and the fellow will participate in monthly division research meetings and submit abstracts to at least one Cleft/CF meeting and at least one Hand/Micro meeting.

Conferences:

• Monthly Protected Case Review/Indications Conference (first Wednesday of each month at 8 am)
• Monthly division research meeting (first Wednesday of each month at 9 am)
• Quarterly Cleft/Craniofacial Journal Club: surgeons, SLPs, orthodontists, behavioral health specialists (Monday evening 5:30-7:30 pm)
• Quarterly Pediatric plastic surgery/hand/micro journal club: all surgeons, PA's, residents, and fellow (evening time to be designated after polling)
• Monthly Mayo Plastic Surgery Journal Club 
• Weekly Mayo Plastic Surgery Core Conference (optional)
• Weekly didactic to be scheduled with surgeons designated for the rotation (diagnosis review, treatment planning, case reviews, etc.)

Research:

Additionally, the fellow will participate in the design and execution of departmental research projects in collaboration with faculty and staff.  Research opportunities are available in the areas of, but not limited to, cleft, craniofacial, and hand.
